Want a sex toy you can both use?

Sex doctor: Toys you can both enjoy

By Tracey Cox

Mention sex toys and our minds instantly flick to a hand reaching furtively for the bedroom drawer on a lonely night in alone. But sex toys are a lot more couple-friendly than they've ever been, and one of the quickest ways to introduce novelty in your sex life is to invite a nice, new, shiny plaything into it. This is one threesome I heartily approve of: you, your partner and a sex toy. (Or three.)

Firstly, sex toys are fun. Secondly, if it vibrates then she's instantly light years ahead in the probability-of-an-orgasm race.

There's an alarming array of goods out there, so, to help you along, here is a selection of sex toys that work.

If you're a heterosexual couple and you make only one purchase, it has to be a vibrator, simply because they remain the easiest, most effective way to bring women to orgasm. The clitoris loves consistent, intense stimulation and nothing provides that more efficiently than a vibrator. What to choose? There's everything from a rubber duck to something that looks like it should be in a cage. The most versatile in terms of size and all-round use is probably what's called a "classic" or "torpedo" vibe. It's a compact, cylindrical vibrator that you hold against the clitoris while he's using his fingers or during intercourse. It's non-threatening for him because it's not big or sculpted to look like a penis and it's small enough not to feel too intrusive.

Bullet vibes look like large tampons, are often made of metal and sit snugly between the vaginal lips, providing strong clitoral stimulation. These are very couple friendly: perfect for caressing nipples, around the rim of your bottom anywhere you fancy a bit of a buzz really. Add perfect portability, sleek and sexy designs and you'll understand why they've shot to the top of the bestseller list. Also ingenious are butterfly vibrators with harnesses. A small vibrator nestles inside a jelly butterfly-shaped sleeve. This is positioned on top of her clitoris, the straps then go around both her legs to hold it in place. Turn it on and the butterfly wings flutter over her most sensitive part. The main advantage is that it's hands-free so you can leave it in place during intercourse.

Another more recent "intercourse" vibrator is one that's designed to be worn both internally and externally during intercourse, upping her chances of penetrative orgasm dramatically. The appropriately named We-Vibe is small and C-shaped about three inches long and one inch wide. You turn it on, insert one end up to the bend and, because it's flexible, the whole thing then opens to an "L" shape. The larger clitoral pad sits against the labia and against the clitoris, the other end works on the G-spot. It flattens out so smoothly, he can't feel it during sex but he does feel the powerful vibrations. (It costs around 75 and is available exclusively through www.lovehoney.co.uk.)

Vibrating penis rings are also a great idea. They're penis rings usually rubber with little vibrators attached for clitoral stimulation. I was unconvinced when I first saw them. The reason why? If you use traditional in-out thrusting, the vibrator doesn't maintain contact with the clitoris for long enough to be effective. Use a grinding, circular motion, however, with him keeping his pelvis pressed close against hers during intercourse, and you may get a very pleasant surprise. I've got one in my range (www.traceycoxshop.co.uk).

What else to add to the shopping basket? Throw in some pelvic floor toners. The more toned her vaginal muscles, the better sex will be for both of you, since she's able to grip his penis tighter. Most of them resemble tiny barbells that work on weight resistance. She rhythmically squeezes the muscles, doing sets of Kegel exercises on a repetitive basis. You can do Kegels without the gadgets but having something to grip on to, means you're more likely to be doing the exercises correctly. Highly recommended after childbirth but handy for anyone who wants to keep all of them in shape.

Given that the rectum is rich in nerve endings, the braver among you might like to venture into anal toys. Anal vibrators are squatter than usual, with a flared base. They can be used on both men and women in a variety of ways, during oral sex or left in during intercourse. Soft and jelly-like, "butt plugs" stay in better, though they don't vibrate.

While I wouldn't recommend buying "dress up clothes" from sex shops for role-play (they're usually badly made and overpriced), you could throw in a few props. Whips and riding crops aren't half as threatening as they sound and spanking is a safe but sexy way to "kink" things up without feeling like complete deviants. That soft rubber whip swishes through the air making a menacing sound but lands with a whisper-soft touch. All talk and no action which can be exactly what you want for role-play.

Cleaning Your Sex Toys

November 24, 2008

OK, so you’ve got this great sex toy and you can’t wait to use it. But let’s keep it clean! Cleaning your sex toys properly is important for several reasons. First, you do not want to spread disease. Sexually transmitted infections can be spread by sharing sex toys or using them with more than one person without cleaning them. Also, if not cleaned after use by a couple or an individual, bacteria that is not sexually related can grow on your toy and cause a nasty infection. And don’t forget about hepatitis from anal sex play!

Second, if you clean your sex toys properly, they will stay in good condition and last longer!  If you are not going to use a toy that runs on batteries for a week or more, you should take the batteries out because they can get corroded and ruin the toy. Also keep your toys stored in a cool, dry place.  One thing you can do to practice safe sex while using a toy that is going to be inserted anywhere is to put a condom on it. However, even if you use a condom, you still need to clean the toy when you are finished with it.

So those are the whys now for the how to’s!

Since sex toys are made from a lot of different materials, glass, latex, plastic, rubber etc., cleaning them properly depends on what they are made of.  The good news is most sex toys are very easy to clean! Usually just using a wet towel with soap and water and then drying it with a dry towel will do the trick. However, if you have used any sex toy anally you must be sure to clean it with alcohol, antibacterial soap and water and dry it completely when done. All cleaning should be done as soon as possible after you finish using them. This does not mean you have to jump out of bed right after your orgasm and run to the bathroom to clean your toy. But do not wait until the next day either. This provides just the opportunity bacteria are waiting for.  Be sure not to get the control or battery area wet either! This will damage your sex toy and you don’t want it going kaput in the middle of your next use!

These are the cleaning methods I recommend for the most popular sex toy materials:

Plastic – antibacterial soap and water, rubbing alcohol, sex toy cleaner
Latex – antibacterial soap and water, sex toy cleaner
Jelly – antibacterial soap and water, sex toy cleaner
Cyberskin – antibacterial soap and water, Cyberskin cleaner, sex toy cleaner, talcum powder
Silicon – antibacterial soap and water, sex toy cleaner
Glass – antibacterial soap and water, sex toy cleaner, rubbing alcohol, boiling water

The sex toy cleaner can be purchased wherever you get your toys. Just be sure to read the label to make sure you are purchasing the right type of cleaner for your toy. If you have more than one type of toy, made out of different materials, you may have to purchase more than one type of cleaner.

How To Pick The Right Sex Toy For You:

Looking for things you can do to spice up your sex life? Need something to get you out of that same old dull routine? Using sex toys is a great way to enhance your relationship. Whether you are bored with the same routine and want to shake things up or just adventurous and want to try it all, sex toys are an amazing way to add pleasure and excitement to your sexual repertoire!

Choosing the right sex toy for you can be a challenge but it can also be a fun experience to see what is out there.  The first thing you want to consider is what you want to accomplish.

Try answering these simple questions:

What is your goal?

Are you a woman looking for something to stimulate your clitoris to orgasm?

Are you a man looking for something to enhance your erection and give stimulation at the same time?

Do you want something you can use alone, with a partner or both?

Do you want something for penetration or external stimulation or both?

Are you a man who is interested in having your prostate stimulated?

Have you thought about experimenting with games? Food? Handcuffs?

There is no end to the possibilities. There are toys that will fit all these categories and more.  For example:

Dildos are various sized, usually penis shaped toys that do not vibrate and are used for penetration. They can be made of latex, plastic, glass or silicone.

Vibrators come in all shapes and sizes. They can be used externally to stimulate the clitoris, testicles or penis or internally to stimulate the vagina, g-spot or prostate in a male. There is literally no end to the type vibrators available. Some are waterproof and can be used in the shower, bath or hot tub.

Cock Rings are round and can be made of rubber or latex and are slipped over the shaft of the penis at the base to help keep blood in the penis during and erection. Some of them vibrate for extra sensation.

Miscellaneous-you can try feathers and mitts to experience different tactile sensations. Or how about a blindfold and handcuffs? Butt plugs can stimulate the prostate in men and also be pleasurable for women.

The exciting news is that sex toy companies are constantly inventing new products and improving the ones they already have on the market. So there is literally no end to what you have to choose from. If you try a toy and it doesn’t do the trick for you, do not despair! Sometimes it takes trying more than one to find the one that works best for you. Many individuals and couples have a whole toy chest full of toys they enjoy and they use what feels right at the moment. Today there is the option of purchasing sex toys online which saves embarrassment for those who may not be comfortable going into a store. So take a chance! Tell your partner you would like to try using sex toys or better yet, buy one on your own and surprise them with it next time you are in the mood!
